What is maximum supply?
Maximum supply is the total number of units a cryptocurrency can ever have in circulation throughout its existence, as defined in code. When this limit exists and is respected by the protocol, it establishes a ceiling that cannot be exceeded, which gives predictability to the asset's monetary policy and underpins the idea of scarcity.
How it works
In a crypto with a maximum supply, the protocol controls the issuance of new units until the ceiling is reached, and from that point on no new units are created. In Bitcoin, for example, issuance starts high and is cut in half at each halving, gradually approaching the 21 million limit, which is expected to be reached only in the distant future.
It is important to distinguish maximum supply from circulating supply. Circulating supply is how much already exists and is available today; maximum supply is the ceiling that can exist. The difference between the two shows how much is still to be issued, which helps in understanding the future issuance pressure on the asset.
Not every crypto adopts a ceiling. Some maintain continuous issuance, with rules that adjust the creation of new units over time, which changes how scarcity should be assessed.
