What is interoperability?
Interoperability is the ability of distinct systems to work together. In the crypto context, it refers to the possibility of different blockchains communicating, exchanging information, and allowing assets or messages to move from one network to another. Each blockchain has its own rules and its own ledger, and by default it does not see what happens on the others.
How it works
Since networks are independent, getting them to talk to each other requires additional layers. A common approach is bridges, which lock or record an asset on one network and release an equivalent representation on another, allowing the value to be used on the other side. There are also messaging protocols that transmit instructions between networks, and projects designed from the ground up to connect multiple blockchains.
The core challenge is trust. Each network only confirms what happens within itself, so something needs to securely guarantee that an event on one network actually occurred before another network reacts to it. How each solution resolves this guarantee largely defines its security and its weaknesses.
In practice, interoperability allows someone to use assets that exist on one network on another network, or lets applications combine resources from different blockchains. This expands the possibilities, but it also increases the risk surface, since it now depends on the link that connects the networks.
Why it matters
Understanding interoperability helps explain how value circulates between networks and why moving assets between blockchains is not always simple or instantaneous. For a company operating on more than one network, this is relevant practical context, without representing any operational recommendation.
Risks and limitations
Interoperability solutions, especially bridges, are among the most sensitive points in the ecosystem and have already been the target of serious failures. By connecting networks, they concentrate value and create a link that, if compromised, affects both sides. Additionally, the representation of an asset on another network depends entirely on the soundness of the mechanism that supports it, and is worth no more than the security of that link.
