What is a crypto corridor?

A crypto corridor is the path a transfer takes when it uses a stablecoin as a bridge between two national currencies. Instead of sending money directly from one country to another through the traditional banking network, the value is converted into a stablecoin, transferred on the blockchain, and converted back into the local currency at the destination. The stablecoin acts as a common rail between the two sides.

How it works

The flow has three steps. First, the value in local currency is converted into a stablecoin, the entry step, often called on-ramp. Next, the stablecoin is transferred on the blockchain, quickly and without relying on correspondent banks. Finally, at the destination, the stablecoin is converted into local currency and settled through that country's payment rails, the exit step, or off-ramp.

In the Brazilian case, the final leg is usually PIX, which delivers the value in reais instantly. This way, the recipient doesn't need to deal with crypto at all: they receive reais in their account, while the stablecoin only served as a transport rail along the way.

The central advantage lies in bypassing the chain of intermediaries found in traditional international transfers. Each intermediary adds cost and time, and the stablecoin shortens that path by moving value directly on the blockchain. At its core, the corridor is the combination of an entry point, a stablecoin leg, and an exit point well integrated with local payments.

The quality of a corridor depends on how liquid and reliable the conversion points are and how well the local settlement is integrated.

Why it matters

Understanding this concept helps explain how cross-border payments can become faster and cheaper by using crypto as infrastructure, without the end user needing to understand blockchain. For a freelancer receiving payment from abroad or a company paying suppliers, the corridor is what connects the origin currency to the Brazilian real in a practical way.

Limitations

A crypto corridor is only efficient if the conversion points are liquid and regulated; bottlenecks at the entry or exit erase the speed gain. The quality of the stablecoin used along the way also matters, since any weakness in it affects the value being transported.
