Bond

Título de renda fixa que representa um empréstimo a um emissor, como uma empresa ou um governo, que promete devolver o valor com juros ao longo do tempo.

Key points

  • A bond represents a loan made to an issuer, which can be a company or a government.
  • In exchange, the issuer commits to repaying the borrowed amount with interest within a defined term.
  • It is a fixed-income instrument, whose return is agreed upon in advance, in contrast to assets with uncertain returns.

What is a bond?

A bond is a financial instrument that formalizes a loan. Whoever buys the bond is, in practice, lending money to the issuer, which can be a government or a company. In return, the issuer commits to paying interest and repaying the principal amount at the end of a set term. It is one of the most traditional ways to raise funds.

How it works

The mechanics follow simple loan logic. The issuer needs funds and obtains them by issuing bonds; buyers provide that money expecting to receive it back with an increment. That increment is the interest, defined according to agreed conditions, and the term establishes when the principal amount will be repaid. Because its rules are known from the outset, the bond is classified as fixed income.

The term fixed income does not mean a guaranteed return in every scenario, but rather that the payment rules are known in advance. The main risk is that the issuer may fail to honor the commitment, which varies according to its financial soundness. Stable governments and large companies tend to be seen as safer issuers than fragile ones, and this difference in risk is reflected in the interest offered.

In the crypto context, the concept comes up mainly in discussions about tokenization of real-world assets. The idea is to represent traditional instruments, such as bonds, in the form of tokens on a blockchain, which could facilitate their trading and custody. In that case, the token is merely a representation; the bond and its rules remain those of the original instrument.

Understanding the concept of a bond helps make sense of these discussions without confusing the representation with the asset itself.

Why it matters

Understanding what a bond is helps in interpreting debates about the tokenization of traditional assets and in distinguishing fixed income from assets with uncertain returns. It is a foundational concept in finance, useful as context. This is an educational explanation and does not represent any investment or trading recommendation.

Risks and limitations

A bond carries the risk that the issuer may not pay, which varies according to its financial health. Fixed income is not synonymous with the absence of risk, and the tokenized version of a bond adds the risks of the technology and structure that support it. Nothing here represents investment advice, only a description of the instrument.
