Bitcoin Dominance
Proporção entre a capitalização de mercado do Bitcoin e a soma das capitalizações de todas as criptomoedas, usada para medir seu peso relativo.
Key points
- Bitcoin dominance is the ratio between Bitcoin's market capitalization and the sum of the market capitalizations of all cryptocurrencies.
- It is an indicator of Bitcoin's relative weight in the market: when it rises, Bitcoin is gaining share; when it falls, other coins are gaining share.
- It is useful for tracking market sentiment, but it is a proportion metric, and this does not represent any trading recommendation.
What is Bitcoin dominance?
Bitcoin dominance is the share Bitcoin represents within the total value of the crypto market. The calculation divides Bitcoin's market capitalization by the combined market capitalization of all assets. The result, expressed as a percentage, shows how much Bitcoin weighs relative to the whole, and it is tracked as a market thermometer.
How it works
Dominance moves based on two factors: changes in Bitcoin's value and changes in the value of other coins. If Bitcoin rises more than the rest, its dominance increases. If other coins rise more, Bitcoin's dominance falls, even if its price has gone up. Because it is a proportion, it describes relative weight, not absolute performance.
Historically, drops in dominance tend to be associated with periods when capital shifts toward other coins, which market literature describes as movement between assets. It is important to remember that the metric depends on how the set of cryptocurrencies considered is defined, which can vary between sources.
The entry of new assets into the market and the inclusion or exclusion of stablecoins from the calculation also affect the reading, which requires caution when comparing figures from different sources.
Why it matters
Dominance helps contextualize market movements: understanding whether Bitcoin is gaining or losing relative weight provides a complementary reading to price alone. It is a descriptive reference for the state of the market, useful for monitoring, and this does not represent any trading recommendation.
Limitations
Dominance is sensitive to methodology: including or excluding stablecoins and smaller assets changes the result. It also says nothing about the quality of the assets, only about the proportion of value. Interpreting it in isolation can be misleading, since the same variation can result from very different causes in Bitcoin or in the rest of the market. For this reason, dominance is best read as a trend over time rather than as an exact figure for a single day.
