A paper wallet is an old way of storing crypto that consists of printing or writing down, on a piece of paper, a receiving address and its corresponding private key. The idea was to keep the key completely offline, away from digital threats, turning the paper into the medium for holding the secret. For a long time, it was presented as a simple cold storage option.

How it works

A paper wallet brings together, in a single physical record, what is needed to receive and, later, spend the funds: the public address and the private key. To receive, you simply send funds to the address; to spend, you need to use the written-down private key, importing it into a compatible wallet. As long as the paper stays kept safe and the key is not used, the secret remains isolated from connected devices.

The appeal, at the time it became popular, was simplicity and zero cost. Without depending on any special device, anyone could generate and store a key on paper, keeping it offline. For those who wanted a long-term reserve without dedicated equipment, it seemed like an accessible solution to keep the key out of reach of digital threats.

Today, however, paper wallets are widely discouraged because of their weaknesses. Paper is vulnerable to loss, damage, moisture, and fire, and a damaged or lost key means unrecoverable funds. Generating the key securely requires care that many people lack, and the moment it is used, importing it into a device, tends to expose the secret. In addition, the format handles partial receipts and modern best practices poorly. For all these reasons, dedicated cold storage devices have replaced paper wallets as the recommended way to hold funds offline.
