What is gwei?

Gwei is a subunit of ether used to make small values, especially network fees, easier to read. Just as a real is divided into centavos, ether is divided into much smaller units, and gwei is the one most commonly used day to day to talk about transaction cost. One gwei corresponds to one billionth of an ether.

How it works

The cost of a transaction on networks compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine depends on how much gas it consumes and how much is paid per unit of gas. This unit price is normally quoted in gwei. If an operation consumes a certain amount of gas and the user offers a price in gwei per unit, the total cost is the product of the two, converted into ether.

Because the space in each block is limited, the price in gwei rises when there is heavy competition for processing and falls during quieter periods. Offering more gwei per unit of gas increases the chance that a transaction is included quickly, while low values may leave it waiting. For this reason, wallets typically suggest a gwei price based on current demand.

Working in gwei avoids dealing with numbers full of decimal places, which would make fees hard to compare if they were always expressed in ether.

Why it matters

Understanding gwei helps control how much is paid per transaction. For a company running many on-chain operations, tracking the gwei price and choosing times of lower congestion has a direct effect on cost. It is the practical unit that translates competition for network space into a simple decision about how much to pay.

Risks and limitations

The gwei price is unpredictable on heavily congested networks, which makes it hard to estimate costs precisely. Paying too little can leave a transaction stuck for a long time; paying too much wastes resources. Since each network has its own dynamics, the appropriate gwei value on one network is not a direct reference for another. Following the wallet's own suggestion is usually enough for most operations.
